That could have been helped by a good story, but once Sara actually reaches the forest, the plot just sort of stops.

Despite all the loud noises and sudden shocks, the scares are just boring. Any atmosphere created by the forest is frittered away by a dull jump scare. The Forest does not use its setting to its advantage. 2014's As Above, So Below took an intrinsically creepy setting, the Paris catacombs, and used an unsettling atmosphere and good scares to make one of the better horror films of that year. The film has a pretty interesting premise and could have worked if executed correctly. Jess has disappeared into the forest, and Sara travels to Japan to go into the forest to look for her, unaware of the demons that lurk in the forest. The Forest stars Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer in a dual role as twins Jess and Sara. Its inherently scary atmosphere is perfect for a good horror movie, but The Forest mostly squanders its promise by degrading it to a hot spot for cheap jump scares. Japan's Aokigahara 'Suicide Forest' by itself is a creepy and gruesome place because of its reputation as one of the most notorious suicide spots in the world as well as its historic association with demons in Japanese mythology.

Not only does his light color T-Shirt show no sign of bodily fluids or rotting flesh, in real life the smell of the decaying body on Aiden's clothing and skin would be so overwhelming as to be unbearable, not only to him but to those around him (that's why those who work around crime scenes, dead bodies, etc., wear special disposable bio suits and sometimes must even dispose of their street clothing if it is saturated with the odor of decaying tissue- the smell is that bad).

Furthermore- immediately after having the corpse directly across his shoulders- Aiden continues his hike in close proximity to his companions. Even an inexperienced person like Aiden would know better than to make close, direct physical contact with a putrefying corpse, which is undoubtedly swarming with bacteria and insects- as well as leaking any number of bacteria laden bodily fluids- creating a highly unsanitary situation. The chances of this happening in real life are extremely unlikely. As Michi cuts the rope, Aiden takes the body in a 'Fireman's Carry' across his shoulders and lowers it to the ground. Themes relevant anywhere in the World, and captured perfectly by Spurrier.During their first excursion into the forest with Sara, Aiden & Michi remove a decaying dead body hanging from a tree.

He did a fine job in all those departments, and delivered a worthwhile film that dealt with various themes from bullying, school politics, belonging, spiritual being and it even touched on religion. Director, Spurrier, seemed to be a one man band crew as he also photographed, edited, wrote the screenplay and even scored the music. The dilemmas he faced were conflicting with his morals, and those issues were dealt with intelligibly.

Preecha, played brilliantly by Asanee Suwan, walked away from being a Monk so he could teach the children how to face the World. The highlight was the character of the new male teacher in a backward school town. The two played off each other so well that it gave the film a sense of neorealism. The child actress, Wannasa Wintawong, took the limelight, along with her companion, Tanapol Kamkunkam, who played the feral boy, protector of the forest.

More importantly was the performances by the actors that made these characters shine. The two main protagonists, the teacher and the silent student, were well crafted characters that held you in there until the story took an interesting turn for that second half. So it eventually had my attention, and I was glad that my finger didn't press the stop button earlier.

A little clumsy with the set-up, but that was all soon forgiven when the second half of this movie ventured into a dark mysterious path with some violence and other adult themes. It seemed to be a fable for children, with morals on the evil of bullying, as well as befriending ghosts and goblins in the forest. I wasn't quite sure what genre THE FOREST was for the first fifty minutes.
